Your new ID card from Medicare

What you need to know

Your current red, white and blue Medicare ID card is changing. To help protect you from identity theft, your card will no longer list your Social Security number. Instead, Medicare will mail you a new card with a unique Medicare number. Keep in mind, this won’t affect your current Aetna Medicare ID card or your health care coverage.

What you need to do

  • Make sure your mailing address is up to date. To check, visit ssa.gov/myaccount, or call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778).
  • Look for your new card in the mail.
    1. It will arrive between April 2018 and April 2019.
    2. File it in a safe place and destroy your old card.

What you should not do

  • Don’t share your Medicare number or other personal information if someone calls and asks for it. Medicare will never call you before sending new cards.
  • You don’t need to give the new card to your health care provider. You’ll still only need your Aetna Medicare ID card.
