- You must enroll during the Initial Election Period (starting three months before, including the month of, and lasting for three months after you first qualify for Medicare); OR

Your coverage will become effective:
- The first day of the month after Aetna receives your completed enrollment OR
- January 1, 2012, if you enroll during the Annual Election Period from October 15 – December 7, 2011.
If you were eligible to join a Medicare prescription drug plan before January 1, 2006, but did not, you may pay a penalty to join now. Medicare sets the penalty, and it increases your plan premium by 1% of the national base beneficiary premium for every month you were eligible but did not join (unless you have creditable coverage).
If you don’t join a Medicare drug plan when you are first eligible for Medicare Part A and/or B and you go without creditable prescription drug coverage for 63 continuous days or more, you may have to pay a late-enrollment penalty to join a plan later. Members who qualify for Medicare Extra Help do not have to pay a late-enrollment penalty.
After you become a member of an Aetna Medicare Rx Plan, you’ll receive an Evidence of Coverage document that explains your coverage in detail.
Medicare Rx Enrollment Disclaimers
You may enroll in only one Part D plan at a time. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may not enroll in a prescription drug plan unless you are a member of a Private Fee-for-Service Plan (PFFS) that does not provide Medicare prescription drug coverage, a Medical Savings Account MA Plan (MSA), or an 1876 Cost Plan.
The federal government has established periods when people can join and change their Medicare prescription drug coverage. In general, unless you qualify for a special election period, you can change Medicare prescription drug plans once each year during the Annual Election Period (AEP), this year between October 15 and December 7, 2011. The change will take effect on January 1, 2012.
