Learn about Medicare

Medicare Supplement

Medicare Supplement plans are also called Medigap. They are designed to work with Original Medicare Parts A and B. They help pay for some health care costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as deductibles and coinsurance. You must have Medicare Parts A and B to qualify for a Medicare Supplement plan. These plans are offered by private insurance companies in your state. Note: you can't enroll in both a Medicare Supplement plan and a Medicare Advantage plan.

Is there a monthly premium?

Yes. You pay your Medicare Supplement premium in addition to your Part B and Part A premiums, if you have them.

How do I switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to a Medicare Supplement plan?

If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can apply for a Medicare Supplement policy, but make sure you can leave the Medicare Advantage Plan before your new plan begins.

Can I purchase a Medicare Supplement plan if I have a Medicare Medical Savings Account?

No, it's illegal for anyone to sell you a Medicare Supplement plan if you have a Medicare Medical Savings (MSA) plan.

In general, Medicare Supplement plans offer:

  • Freedom to choose your doctors and hospitals as long as they accept Medicare.
  • The same basic standardized plan benefits, but costs vary by company and policy.
  • The ability to move to a different state without having to cancel or terminate coverage, as long as both your Medicare Supplement plan and Part B monthly premiums are paid (as well as your Part A premium if you have one).
  • Coverage within the U.S. Some plans help cover medical emergencies when traveling outside the U.S.

Medicare Supplement plans don't cover:

  • Long-term care
  • Vision care
  • Dental care
  • Hearing aids
  • Eyeglasses
  • Private-duty nursing
  • Prescription drugs
