Medicare eligibility

You're eligible for Medicare if:

  • You're age 65 or older
  • You're under 65 with certain disabilities
  • You have ESRD (end-stage renal disease, permanent kidney failure treated with dialysis or a transplant) or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), regardless of your age
Frequently asked questions

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is seven months long and includes:


The three months before your 65th birthday

The entire month of your 65th birthday


The three months after your 65th birthday

For example, if your birthday is in March, you may enroll in Medicare for the first time anytime between December and June.

Enrollment and Medicare card

You'll automatically get your Medicare card in the mail three months prior to your eligibility. You will automatically be enrolled into Medicare Part A. Then you can choose to enroll in Medicare Part B if you need medical coverage.

If you already receive Social Security benefits, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A. A Medicare card should be sent to you:

  • Three months before your 65th birthday or
  • During the 25th month of receiving disability benefits
